Friday, July 30, 2010 predictions for local HS football

When sends its ballots out to high school head football coaches across the state, the vote takes place in the late winter and early spring - long before summer workouts, long before the end of the head coaching carousel, and certainly long before the official first day of practice.

Some of their picks make sense and some don't.

I think when the coaches get together in mid-August to officially vote on their preseason choices, these polls will pretty much hold true.

You be the judge! The coaches also voted on their pick for the Player of the Year in their respective leagues.

Here are the high football coaches' preseason picks for the Big East 3-A Conference, the Eastern Plains 2-A Conference and the Tar-Roanoke 1-A Conference:

Big East 3-A:

1. Southern Nash
2. Rocky Mount
3. Wilson Hunt
4. Nash Central
5. Wilson Fike
6. Northern Nash

Player of the Year: RB - Tracy Coppedge - Southern Nash

Eastern Plains 2-A:

1. SouthWest Edgecombe
2. Tarboro

3. Kinston
4. Beddingfield

Tar-Roanoke 1-A:

2. Southeast Halifax
3. Gates County
4. Weldon
5. Northampton-West
6. Northampton-East
7. KIPP Pride
