Brown becomes team's second 1,000-point scorer

Rocky Mount junior J'Kyra Brown
Rocky Mount's J'Kyra Brown knows when her team needs her to score.

The 5-foot-8 junior, who has helped RMHS compile a 48-6 record over the last two seasons, can drive to the basket or bury the 3-pointer. And she's not a bad free throw shooter, either.

The East Carolina-bound recruit has done so much of all three the last two seasons that she has now scored over 1,000 career points.

Her next to last basket in Monday's NCHSAA 3-A first-round playoff game against Wilson Hunt got her to the mark. She scored once more to end the game with 1,002 points for her career.

And think how many she would have if she hadn't sat out her freshman season with a knee injury.

She joins Tashawn Mabry, Phil Ford and the late Kim Taylor as the only Rocky Mount varsity players to score 1,000 points in their first two seasons of action.

Also, the 2011-12 varsity girls team is the first squad since the 1977-78 vasity boys (Buck Williams/Jeff Battle) to feature two 1,000-point scorers. She has now joined senior Tia Hudgins in the club.
