My recollection is that the 63 and 65 championships were determined in a 3-game series too. Again, this is recollection from 40-something years ago and I was in elementary school in 63 and jr hi in 65, so I may well be wrong. I think the 63 series went 3 games, or maybe not, then again, maybe that was the 65 series. Oh well, one of us is getting old!

The NCHSAA only listed one score for 1963 and 1965 in its baseball record book. Thanks to Ernie Murray, both 1963 scores are up. Does anyone know the other score or scores from 1965?

Charles: Why not add the coaches to this liating? They are:

1963 Dudley Whitley
1965 Dudley Whitley
1967 Dale Tompkins
1973 Jerry Carter
1980 George Kelly
2008 Pat Smith
(Note that the game program sold at Five County Stadium had Coach Tompkins' first name wrong. He was an interesting guy. He coached one year, won a state championship, and got out of coaching.)

OK I went to the library and checked the old Telegrams. The 63 series went 2 games 2-1 and 11-6 and both games were played in Charlotte.

The 65 series was played entirely in Rocky Mount. The Blackbirds dropped the first game 4-3 and lost 2-1 the next night.

So contrary to my first post, neither of those serieses went 3 games.

There were sophomores on the 63 team that were seniors on the 65 team and sophomores on that 65 team that were seniors on the 67 team.
