The shot is of two football players from each of the league's six teams (in home and away uniforms) on a locomotive from Nash County Railroad in Rocky Mount.

Gryphs shine in Wake Forest

WAKE FOREST - Rocky Mount got two touchdowns from junior Nick Hahula and one each from senior Derek Hagans and sophomore Hiawatha Bunn as the Gryphons scored six times times and allowed just one while facing Raleigh Broughton and Durham Jordan during Friday's second annual Friday Night Pigskin Kickoff in Wake Forest-Rolesville's Trentini Stadium.

Hahula was the scoring leader for the Gryphons - getting the first of his two 5-yard scoring runs to go with his 32-yard field goal against Broughton. RMHS topped the Caps 4-0 in total scores.

The highlight play of the evening came in the Gryphs' encounter with Durham Jordan. On the first RMHS offensive play, quarterback Bunn hit Donovan Sinclair with a perfect 40-yard touchdown strike up the right sideline.

Hahula's second TD run came six plays later.

The defense didn't play badly either as junior Nick Harrison recorded two sacks and junior Chris Pittman and senior Ezra Hudgins each tallied one apiece. Jordan got the only score RMHS allowed all evening on a 15-yard run by Delson McAdams.

The Gryphons added a spirited impromptu scrimmage with East Wake on Wake Forest-Rolesville's baseball field after their 90-minute time allotment in Trentini Stadium ended.

Rocky Mount opens the regular season Friday with a 7:30 p.m. home endowment contest with Northampton-East. The Gryphons are opening their 20th season at the Rocky Mount Athletic Complex!

Final 2007 Coleman-Pitt Post 58 baseball stats

Nash County Coleman-Pitt Post 58, despite playing just 25 of the original 34 American Legion baseball games it was scheduled to play, had one of its most offense seasons, statistically, in recent memory.

The team suffered through an abnormally high 70 errors, but scored 195 runs while giving up 98. The team batted .340 for the season with an astounding 27 home runs, but the pitching staff had a steep 3.11 ERA.

Nash Co. makes regional semis

LUMBERTON - Nash County's 14-year-old Babe Ruth All-Stars have made the Southeast region semifinals. A 20-4 victory over Virginia Tuesday at Lumberton High School, combined with a Florida win over Alabama, gave Nash County the No. 1 seed in its side of the bracket.

Nash County (3-1) will face the winner of Wednesday morning's Tallahasse, Fl.-South Carolina matchup later in the day at 4. On the other side of the bracket, top-seeded Lawrenceburg, Tn. (4-0) has a 7 p.m. date with the victor of the 1 p.m. Saratota, Fl.-Georgia contest.

The two semifinal winners play Thursday at 7 p.m. for the right to go to the World Series.

In that 20-4 Nash County win, Jeremy Sloop got the win - going three innings, giving up four hits and striking out four. Nash County banged out 18 hits in the contest and really helped itself by exploding for nine runs in the second inning. Twelve of the 14 players in the lineup got at least one hit. Catcher Thomas Berry is currently out of the lineup with an ankle injury.

N.C. Wesleyan picked to win USA South

I can remember it like it was yesterday.

N.C. Wesleyan head football coach Jack Ginn, his wife Sherri and I, after attending the press conference that introduced him as the school's first-ever football coach, rode together over to what is now the Battling Bishops' practice field and surveyed an untamed field and started wondering how things were going to be for the future of Battling Bishops football.

We are wondering no longer!

Tuesday in Fayetteville, NCWC, in a vote of the USA South Athletic Conference's coaches, made the Battling Bishops the preseason favorite to win the league.

But just three short seasons into the program Ginn has methodically built a winner - and the NCWC braintrust has to be patting itself on the back for picking the right man for the job.

North Carolina Wesleyan College, under the direction of fourth-year head coach Jack Ginn (pictured), was picked in the preseason coaches' poll to win the USA South Athletic Conference football title in 2007. The Battling Bishops have yet to claim a USA South title but placed third in the standings last fall, which was the best finish in school history. Wesleyan posted a 6-4 record in 2006, including a 5-2 mark in USA South play.

The Blue & Gold hope for even more success in 2008 as they return the last year’s Offensive Player of the Year and Offensive Rookie of the Year in quarterback Cedric Townsend and tailback Teron Bush, along with approximately 60 letterwinners overall. Entering his fourth season with the Bishops, 2008 will also mark the first senior class for Ginn, who began the program in 2004.

"This could be a very special year for our seniors," said Ginn at Tuesday's USA South Football Media Day press conference. "We started this program with over 140 guys, and these 26 young men have stuck with us. They will be our leaders both on and off the field."

For the first time in conference history, the preseason poll was released at the annual event, which was held this year at Methodist University. The Bishops received six of eight first place votes (48 points) as head coaches do not vote for their own teams in the balloting.

Christopher Newport University, the five-time USA South co-champions, finished second in the balloting with 44 points and the remaining two first place votes. Methodist University placed third in the poll with 33 points while Averett University, which claimed a share of the USA South title last season, was fourth with 31 points. The bottom half of the preseason poll featured Maryville College with 27 points, Ferrum College with 17 points, Greensboro College with 15 points and Shenandoah University with nine points.

The 2007 USA South football schedule kicks off on Saturday, Sept.1 as six teams begin their seasons with non-conference action. Wesleyan will travel to Dover, De. to take on perennial power Wesley College at 1 p.m.

Gryphons, new coaches, hit the practice field!

- New RMHS assistant coaches Ed Hiatt, Gerald Costen, Donovan Jackson

Over 100 kids turned out for Rocky Mount's first football practice Monday evening.

Fifth-year head coach B.W. Holt said it was the best-conditioned group he's had since he's been here. He was pleased with the turnout and he was pleased with the first day of practice.

There have been some changes on his staff, however.

Defensive coordinator Brent David, who came with Holt to Rocky Mount in 2003, has resigned and has taken a job closer to his native High Point. He will be a defensive coach at Winston-Salem Carver this season.

Holt, despite the lateness of David's departure, would like to fill his coaching spot before the start of the school year, if possible.

Holt, however, has added a coach to fill Chad Smith's (now new Norhthern Nash head coach) position.

Donovan Jackson has joined the staff as an offensive line coach. Jackson, playing on the offensive line, helped lead Winston-Salem Parkland to a 3-A state championship in 2001. He was a four-year starter on the O-line at Norfolk State and he played on the AFL 2's Laredo Lobos football team this summer. He will teach world history at RMHS.

"I am very excited to be here," said Jackson, 22. "I have heard a lot about the program and I am delighted to start my coaching career here. Rocky Mount has had a great amount talent over the years. I hope I can bring some desire and intensity to add to that talent. That's the recipe for winning a championship. Talent mixed in with intensity and desire."

A former RMHS assistant football and head basketball coach has returned as a volunteer coach. Gerald Costen, a former Gryphon player himself (Class of '72) will be helping out the Rocky Mount secondary. Costen has to feel like an empty-nester now. The last of his two children, a former cheerleader Shirleyse, graduated from RMHS in June and is a freshman at the University of Georgia.

This group will join Jason Battle (offensive coordinator), Kent Cox (secondary), Chris Lee (backs, quarterbacks), Curtis Rushing (special teams, defense), J.J. Jones (defense) and new addition Ed Hiatt (defense), who was featured in an earlier blog entry.

Battle, incidently, has been on an emotional ride of late. On Monday, he and his wife celebrated the birth of their first child - a girl. But at the same time, his thoughts were with his father, who is in the Burn Center at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill. The elder Battle suffered severe burns to his body in an accident in Wilson County a few weeks ago.

Our sincere prayers go out to the Battle family and we wish him a speedy recovery!

The Holt Connection

When you've been a head coach for 38 years, you're bound to have had a lot of influence on people.

Such is the case with Rocky Mount head football coach B.W. Holt. He has inspired several of his former players and former assistant coaches to go on to be head coaches themselves.

Hudgins a preseason All-SoCon football pick

GREENVILLE, S.C. – Former Gryphon Terrell Hudgins is one of four Elon football players who were chosen to the Preseason All-Southern Conference teams by the league’s coaches as announced at the 2007 SoCon Football Rouser.

Claiming First Team All-SoCon honors were sophomore wide receiver Hudgins (Rocky Mount, N.C.), junior linebacker Corey Weaver (New Bern, N.C.) and junior punter Brandon Lane (Greensboro, N.C.). Junior kicker Andrew Wilcox (Richmond, Va.) earned Second Team All-SoCon accolades.

Hudgins was a Second Team All-America pick by The Associated Press, a First Team All-South selection by Football Gazette and an all-SoCon pick by both the league’s coaches and media as a red-shirt freshman in 2006.

Last year, Hudgins became just the second Elon receiver to eclipse the 1,000-receiving yard mark by hauling in 62 balls for 1,027 yards. He led the league and ranked second in the nation by averaging 102.7 receiving yards per game. Hudgins led the squad with eight touchdown catches and had at least 100 yards receiving in six of the 10 games in which he appeared. He set a career-high with 186 receiving yards against Wofford and grabbed a career-high 14 passes versus The Citadel.

Nash Co. 14U wins Eastern NC Babe Ruth state title ... again!

LAURINBURG - Nash County's 14U Babe Ruth All-Stars won the Eastern North Carolina state championship Monday evening with a 10-3 victory over host Laurinburg. Nash County will be making a trip to the Southeast Regionals - this year in Lumberton at Lumberton High School starting Aug. 3.

If the team reaches the Babe Ruth World Series, it won't have far to go either. After playing in Wilson last summer, it's being held a little over two hours up I-95 in Glen Allen, Va., just north of Richmond.

Nash County's pool play schedule in Lumberton is as follows: Aug. 3 vs. Alabama, 10 a.m.; Aug. 5 vs. South Carolina, 7 p.m.; Aug. 6 vs. South Florida, 10 a.m., Aug. 7 vs. Virginia, 10 a.m.

It's a family affair when it comes to Nash County's coaching staff. The manager is former Gryphon football and baseball player Britt Johnson and he is being assisted by Will Johnson, his brother and another ex-Gryphon (football and baseball at RMHS and current Barton baseball player). Also assiting him is their dad Don Johnson, a fixture in Gryphon athletics since 1972. Don, a 1975 RMSH grad, was a manager with the football and baseball team and played on the basketball team. Since the late 90s, Don, who is also a high school and college basketball official as well as a baseball umpire, can be seen at RMHS football games helping out with players' equipment.

"Coming into this All-Star season, we told our guys that the 14-year-olds of Nash County had won the last three state championships," manager Britt Johnson said Tuesday afternoon. "This team decided very quickly that it did not want to be the one to break that streak.

"After we won the districts, we knew that to win the state's we were going to have to play much better than we had been and we needed to start swinging the bats," Johnson added. "Our pitching has been the strong point of this team from the beginning and we knew we had the arms, but we needed more offensive production."

After an opening loss in Laurinburg, Nash County had to climb its way back through the loser's bracket to win six straight games for the title.

Look who's on the cover!

Former Gryphon quarterback Terrell Hudgins is featured on the cover of the 2007 Elon Football Media Guide.

As a redshirt freshman, the QB-turned wide receiver was an AP Div. I-A second-team All-America last season (69 catches for 1,027 yds., eight TDs) and the Phoenix is expecting even bigger things from him this season.

Elon will get its biggest test of the season on Sept. 29 when it hosts defending national champion Appalachian State.

RMHS duo goes out a winner

Needless to say, Rocky Mount's Kendall Noble and Nazir Levine were already winners.

But the two got to end their high school career with a victory Wednesday. They started on the offensive line for the East in the 59th NCCA East-West All-Star Football Game at Grimsley High School's Jamieson Stadium. Before 7,077 fans, the East broke a five-year losing streak in winning 22-14.

Both Noble and Levine played the entire game on offense and on special teams. The highlight of the night for the duo was a running play midway through the second quarter. The twosome helped open a gaping hole on the right side of the line that allowed East Carteret's Andrew Courman to score on a 50-yard run.

American Legion playoffs start Monday

The American Legion baseball playoffs in Area 1 East kick off Monday evening with four sets of best-of-three series games. The higher seeds have the home-field advantage in each matchup.

Below are the first-round pairings. Nash County Post 58, due to its 3-2 loss to Wilson Post 13 Thursday in its season finale, lost its chance to have home-field in the first round.

Post 58 will start play Monday at Wayne County Post 11 - being played at Mount Olive College's Scarborough Field. Game time is 7 p.m. The two teams will play at RMA's Alexander Field the next night.

Levine, Noble bios for NCCA East-West Football Game program

For those who will not make the 58th Annual North Carolina Coaches Association East-West All-Star Football Game next Wednesday in Greensboro, you won't get to see the bios of Rocky Mount High game representatives Nazir Levine and Kendall Noble in the game programs.

The twosome left Thursday to start practicing for the game, being held at Jamieson Stadium at Grimsley High School.

No ESPY for Barton!

No ESPY for Atkinson, Bulldogs

LOS ANGELES — This time, David didn't have enough rocks in his slingshot.

Barton College, which won the NCAA Division II men's basketball championship in March, couldn't match the voting power of the Los Angeles Dodgers in ESPN's ESPY Awards balloting.

The Bulldogs were beaten by the Dodgers in the category of Best Finish in the awards presentation in the Kodak Theatre on Wednesday evening, Barton sports information director John Hackney said.

Barton head coach Ron Lievense and point guard Anthony Atkinson attended the event, which will air on ESPN on Sunday night at 9. It was Atkinson who scored 10 points in the final 45 seconds to help the Bulldogs overcome a seven-point deficit and upset defending champion Winona (Minn.) State University in the Div. II championship in Springfield, Mass.

Atkinson made the game-winning layup with fractions of a second remaining following a steal by teammate Bobby Buffaloe.

But the four consecutive home runs hit by the Dodgers in the ninth inning to tie their game with the San Diego Padres last Sept. 19 resonated more with the public, which was able to cast votes on the ESPN Web site.

The Dodgers ultimately won the game, 11-10, on Nomar Garciaparra's two-run homer in the 10th inning.

The other two nominees in Best Finish, a new category this year, were Curlin's victory by a nose against Street Sense in the Preakness horse race and Kevin Harvick's Daytona 500 triumph against Mark Martin by .02 seconds, the same amount of time remaining on the clock when Atkinson's game-winning layup swished through the net.

Lievense and Atkinson were the guests of ESPN and attended pre- and post-ESPY parties.

Gryphons will be in Wake Forest on Aug. 10

Rocky Mount's football team will have just one chance for an official scrimmage this coming season.

The Gryphons will attend the second Friday Night Pigskin Preview on Friday, Aug. 10 at Wake Forest-Rolesville High's Trentini Stadium. Rocky Mount played in the event last season as well.

RMHS will play in the 6 p.m. rotation against Durham Jordan, Broughton and East Wake. The other rotations are: 4 p.m.: Bunn, Green Hope, Louisburg and Millbrook; and at 8 p.m.: Clayton, Wake Forest-Rolesville, Garner and Northern Durham.

With the help of a solid offensive line, led by junior Whit Barnes, RMHS hopes to top the record 5,509 total yards it set in 2006.
