HAGERSTOWN, Md. - The Hagertsown Suns, a Class A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, scored six runs in the second inning before going down 9-6 in their season opener Thursday evening.
Former Rocky Mount High and UNC/Miami Dade JUCO standout Brian Goodwin, in his professional debut, slammed a two-run home run that helped tie the game at 9-all in the sixth inning.
The Suns tacked on two runs in the bottom of the eighth and held on for the 11-9 win. Goodwin finished the night going 2-for-4 with four RBI.
Ironically, the Suns moved to Maryland from Rocky Mount, where they were called the Rocky Mount Phillies and played at the now demolished Municipal Stadium. They moved in 1981.
Strangely, the Suns' current stadium is called "Municipal Stadium."

RMHS moves to sixth in statewide Wells Fargo Cup standings
CHAPEL HILL - Wells Fargo, along with the North Carolina High School Athletic Association, announced Monday the standings for winter sports in the Wells Fargo Cup competitions for the 2011-12 academic year.

The Cup program is in its 33rd year.
Rocky Mount, on the strength of the Gryphons' NCHSAA 3-A state title in boys basketball and their deep playoff run in girls basketball, is in the top 10 in the latest statewide Wells Fargo Cup 3-A standings at sixth.

2012 NCHSAA 3-A Boys Basketball State Championship Ring
I thought you'd like to get a gander at how the state championship rings will look for the Rocky Mount boys basketball team from this design by Herff Jones. The above ring will be that of head coach Mike Gainey.
The plan is to present the 2012 Gryphons with their rings at the annual Athletic Banquet in late May. Once the date is set, I will announce it on the Blog.

ECU's Joyner named Conference USA Pitcher-of the-Week
IRVING, Texas - East Carolina junior Tyler Joyner was named Conference USA Pitcher-of-the-Week after tossing his first career complete game against UAB. Joyner becomes the second Pirate to earn the weekly honors following Drew Reynolds Hitter-of-the-Week accolades back on March 12.
Joyner, a 2009 Northern Nash High graduate, picked up his fourth win of the season against UAB on Saturday, tossing his first career complete game. The southpaw scattered four hits in the contest, allowing two runs (one earned) and striking out a career-best eight batters. He faced just four over the minimum on 101 pitches, inducing seven fly outs, 11 ground outs and all four Blazer hits were singles. Joyner retired the side in order in seven of nine frames, facing four batters in the fourth and five in the sixth.
On the season, the Rocky Mount native has allowed 14 runs (13 earned) on 36 hits with 33 strikeouts to just eight walks in 44.0 innings. In six of his seven starts, Joyner has registered four quality starts (6.0-plus IP, 3 or less runs), which is tied with classmate Jharel Cotton for second on the team behind Kevin Brandt's team-leading five. He is holding opposing hitters to a .224 composite batting average.
