The game of American Football has truly developed into a global sport which has been made clearly evident with the attraction of the upcoming IFAF Senior World Championship which will be held in Austria from July 8-16 as eight countries compete for the coveted gold medal.
Former Rocky Mount athlete and Virginia Tech cornerback Stephan Virgil will be playing for the USA team. Virgil is listed on the team roster at 5-11, 190 pounds and he will wear the No. 22. He is one of 39 former college football stars selected for the team.
Many may be surprised by the number of countries that play organized American Football a sport that is stereotyped as a sport mainly played in United States. The International Federation of American Football (IFAF) was formed in 1998 (See complete IFAF History) and currently has 59 country members that participate in the continuously growing sport.
The Senior World Championship is an impressive event that features eight countries from four continents - Australia, Austria, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, Mexico and United States - competing but even more than that, the tournament has attracted spectators from all around the world.
Currently, American football fanatics from 28 different countries have purchased tickets to witness first-hand some of the best players from the world compete in one place! The countries include 24 from Europe, three in North America and Australia.
